If your center is interested in becoming a certified welcome center,
the following are some of the key requirements to becoming one:
QUALIFICATIONS FOR LTPA-CERTIFIED TOURIST INFORMATION CENTERS
- The center must be a member of LTPA, excluding military installations.
- The center must be open year-round, at least forty hours a week except major holidays.
- The center must maintain a rack display of statewide literature. If rack space is not available, a distribution binder should be displayed for the visitors along with ample supply of brochures in storage.
- A copy of the current year's tour guide and state map should be displayed and available upon request.
- Where applicable, Internet access should be available to travel counselors.
- The center must display a guest book at all times for visitors to sign and each center must send monthly visitor counts to LTPA. The sign-in sheet must include the following criteria: Name, State, Zip, number in party and number of nights in Louisiana.
- The center must have at least one LTPA-Certified Travel Counselor employed (20 hours per week minimum) to assist and counsel visitors with travel information. The person taking the Travel Counselor Test must be the person who counsels visitors on a day-to-day basis. The Travel Counselor Certification Test consists of multiple choice, true/false and short answer questions. All information is taken from the Louisiana Tour Guide which should be the tool used for studying.
If the Travel Counselor does not pass the certification test, they will have 60 days to reschedule the test. Retakes can be scheduled with a field representative.
LTPA will offer the certification program annually at the Louisiana Travel & Tourism Summit. One travel counselor from each center must take the test at Summit every year and attend the Travel Fair every other year.
- The center should have an identification sign displayed prominently on the outside of the building, and are encouraged to have a directional street or highway sign (excluding military installations). Any problems obtaining signage from DOTD should be directed to LTPA.
- There will be no limitations on the number of LTPA Certified Visitor Centers as long as they meet all qualifications. If the parish has a legislated DMO then it should be consulted on certification of any visitor center in the parish prior to qualifying.
- A training process will be enacted by LTPA in conjunction with the Office of Tourism.
